WordPress Shortcodes

What are shortcodes?

They usually look something like this:

[menu]

or this:

[menu id=”345″ size=”medium”]

and you can add them into posts or Pages when you write them.

Many widgets and plugins (what are widgets and plugins?) come with shortcodes, often hidden away in the documentation. You could, for example, have a slideshow plugin. If you’ve created a slideshow you could copy and paste the shortcode for that slideshow into a post or Page and have that slideshow appear in your post or Page.

Tip: if copying and pasting shortcode gives strange results then write it in by hand.

For more advanced usage of shortcodes see the official WordPress documentation at http://codex.wordpress.org/Shortcode_API
